Simon Gourley registered architect MArch (Prof) BAS National Certificate in Carpentry

Director

Simon brings a rare combination of hands-on craft and design intelligence to the practice of architecture. Before studying and becoming a registered architect, he grew up on his father’s building sites, completed his trade qualifications, and worked as a carpenter — on the tools, on site, with his hands on the real materials. That foundation shapes everything he does: an instinctive understanding of how things are built, a deep respect for the people who build them, and a design sensibility always grounded in the real world.

He has built a reputation for architecture that is technically rigorous, materially considered, and deeply responsive to its context. His experience spans the full breadth of practice — from award-winning heritage restoration and seismic strengthening to contemporary apartments, townhouse developments, residential alterations, and new homes.

Simon plays a central role in shaping the direction of the practice — guiding projects, mentoring emerging architects, and ensuring the firm’s work consistently reflects its values.

He is approachable, direct, and genuinely excited by the challenges each new project brings. His passion sits at the intersections that define contemporary architecture — construction innovation, material technologies, sustainability, and the social and community dimensions of the built environment — guided by a belief that the best buildings serve people and place with equal generosity.
