Kumutoto site 10

Wellington 2013, unbuilt

A competition submission to develop a significant site on Wellington’s waterfront. Our proposal focused on the provision of public open space. The ground level space preferences public realm over commerce with the provision of porticos to invite the public to engage and feel welcome.  Transparency through the site is maximised to enable views to the harbour. The footprint acknowledges the wharf and city geometries and the architectural expression fits with the neighbours. Allowable building volume is sacrificed to respect the adjacent heritage Ferry Terminal building and to provide public space. Upper level occupants would provide critical mass to enliven public space and support commercial facilities.
